Biographical Information on Nominee
Rebecca Robison has over thirteen years of classroom experience and is recognized within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system as an advocate for all K-12 teachers and students. She firmly believes that effective, science education is a continuum. It must begin with strong, content accurate, inquiry-based experiences for elementary learners. This foundation must be followed with increasingly more sophisticated discovery and critical thinking opportunities that expand the students’ science knowledge and skills as they matriculate through middle and high school.
Rebecca is currently a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District's Science Leadership Cohort and is committed to empowering the learner through providing hands-on inquiry based experiences. In this role, she promotes elementary science throughout the district by leading professional development activities, promoting teacher collaboration, and developing/creating lesson plans, resource guides and science kits for classroom teachers. Within her specific school, Waddell Language Academy (k-8 Magnet second language immersion school), she serves as the Science Facilitator, as well as the Science Laboratory Instructor for grades 2-5. In addition to her busy professional schedule, Rebecca is involved in promoting North Carolina and informing the “general public” as evidenced by her service on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Seafood Festival.
Rebecca has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction. She is Nationally Board Certified (Middle Childhood Generalist), and holds teaching certification in K- 12 Special Education and Elementary (K-6) Education. In addition to science instruction, Rebecca has taught English literacy classes and worked extensively with students displaying behavior disorders.
As an active member of the North Carolina Science Teachers Association, Rebecca has attended and presented at the NCSTA Professional Development Institute each year since 2013.
Mission Statement
As a classroom educator, I always enjoyed doing science with my students but truly discovered a passion for science when I accepted the role of Science Laboratory Teacher in our school. My mission in the laboratory is to create a challenging and exciting learning environment that encourages independent thought and self-discovery through hands-on, inquiry based learning opportunities. Science is the one content area that impacts every aspect of our life. As science leaders, it is our responsibility to teach our students how to approach challenges, work through problems, and have independent thought. What greater skills can a child have as they move into adulthood? As the District 6 Director, I will take that same approach with the teachers and students within the district. I will work to increase participation in science related activities, recognize the accomplishments of our students and teachers, and work with the other District Directors to advance science education throughout the state.
