Kristin Owens-White

District 6 Director - Kristin Owens-White

Biographical Information

I entered the classroom in August of 2020 as an ELA teacher. I was able to move to a science position in the 2022-2023 school year. I currently teach Environmental Connections, an exploratory environmental STEM course, at South Stanly Middle School. As a certified North Carolina Environmental Educator, I am passionate about creating hands-on, meaningful learning experiences that connect students with the natural world. I was honored to be named Beginning Teacher of the Year for both the 2022 - 2023 and 2023 - 2024 school year, and I currently serve as Teacher of the Year at South Stanly Middle for 2024 - 2025. I was also a finalist for Stanly County Schools District Teacher of the Year, recognition that reflects my commitment to student-centered, relationship-driven instruction. I've had the privilege of presenting at the NCSTA Conference in both 2022 and 2023, sharing ideas and practices that engage learners through inquiry, exploration, and real-world connections. My core belief is that "learning is doing"--students learn best when actively participating.

Mission Statement

My platform is rooted in the philosophy of "Maslow before Bloom." Before expecting students to thrive academically, we must meet their basic needs and establish strong, trusting relationships. When students feel safe, seen, and valued, they become open to learning--that's when transformation happens in the classroom. As District 6 Representative, I will advocate for practical, engaging science education and support teachers and students. I'm committed to being a voice for educators who believe in the power of relationships, hands-on learning, and the life-changing potential of science education.
