District 2 Director - Emily Lahr
Biographical Information
Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, I have a passion for science, innovation and exploration. This love of science and learning started at a young age when I joined my uncle, a wildlife biologist, as he worked with endangered species. Ever since that time, I have worked to support and advocate for this field. For the past ten years I have taught high school science, STEM, and Advanced Placement courses full time in rural, Greene County. In addition, I serve as an adjunct professor at East Carolina University supporting pre-service and alternative licensure teachers. I received both my Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Arts in Teaching Science Education from East Carolina University and my Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in curriculum studies and teacher education from Texas Tech University. I recognize the importance of creating a classroom of imagination and engagement through laboratories, technology and the collaboration among colleagues. I am actively involved in continuing education through ongoing professional learning opportunities regionally and nationally. I was a member of the 2022-2024 NCSLA's Science Leadership Fellows Cohort; a member of the 2022-2023 Kenan Fellows cohort; a past North Carolina STEM School of Distinction Reviewer; a mentor for beginning teachers; and a clinical teacher for pre-service educators. I also assist and judge the Regional Student STEM Competitions to include the North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair, and the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. I stay active in academia through researching and publishing to better the future of science education.
Mission Statement
Science is important to me as both an educator and lifelong learner. It is my mission to grow the field of science teaching by assisting educators in making a positive impact on the future of the young scientists, innovators, and problem solvers in North Carolina. My goal in teaching is to break down classroom walls and build an immersive and exciting environment where students can learn through exploration. I want to support others as they engage their students in innovation, and critical thinking. As a teacher-leader, my goal is to foster both students and teachers love of science and perpetuate their curiosity to learn more. I believe now, more than ever, science plays an important role in how education will move forward. I'm a fierce advocate for student science research, the accessibility of materials for teachers and student, and the importance of teachers in and outside of their classrooms. I am passionate about science literacy and supporting teachers as they immerse students through inquiry. I believe all students can learn, and teachers are so much more than just conduits of knowledge; we mold the future. Ultimately, my mission is to support all science educators, formal and informal, as they invest in their students with content through inclusive, diverse, and equitable practices. As a district director, I will seek valuable opportunities for both students and teachers, advocate for science education, and work to share the incredible changes that District 2 teachers are making for our students in science education.
