A
Vernal Pond Construction Guide
The USDA Forest Service, Izaak Walton League
of America and Ducks Unlimited, Inc. are pleased to announce the publication
of "A Guide to Creating Vernal Ponds". This easy to understand
book contains techniques that the educator, private landowner and public
land steward may use to establish ephemeral wetlands. Have you noticed
how many frogs, toads and salamanders are found in a wetland that does
not contain fish? Ephemeral wetlands, or vernal ponds, that do not contain
fish provide critical habitat to wood frogs, spotted salamanders, fairy
shrimp, and many other species. It is now possible to make a vernal
pond that looks and functions like a natural wetland. Vernal ponds provide
critical habitat to amphibian, reptile, waterfowl, shorebird and bat
species throughout North America. Please visit: http://www.southernregion.fs.fed.us/boone/
to view on online version of the book, or to download an order form
for a paper copy.

but we would be happy to give it to interested specialists at the elementary
level. The book is page after page of magnificent color photos of plants
that may soon be found only in print, and not in their natural settings.
If you feel "Rare Plants of North America" would be a valuable addition
to your teaching resources or media center, please contact us. Unfortunately,
the grant does not include funds for postage. If you are not close enough
to pick up a copy of the book, weâll try to work something out. Contact Lynn Cole, Assistant Programs

a means to bring to life the NC Science Standard Course of Study. GLOBE
is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science
and education program. For Students, GLOBE provides the opportunity
to learn by taking scientifically valid measurements in the fields of
atmosphere, hydrology, soils, and land cover/phenology reporting their
data through the Internet to the student data archive and more. For
teachers, GLOBE provides assistance through training at professional
development workshops and great material support. GLOBE students contribute
data for scientists to use in their research. Teachers and other educators
who wish to lead students in GLOBE need to attend special workshops
in order to fully participate in the program.
