NCSTA Leadership

Greetings, Thank you fellow science teachers for allowing me to serve as your President. It has been an exciting year as well as a challenging one. We have tried to make some changes this year by putting more of our information on the web. As members, we are trying to serve you in a more timely manner. This change has been slow for the membership to accept but we feel it will be in the best interest of the organization. Our efforts as a Board of Directors are to ensure quality services to our membership. Several of the more exciting events were the outstanding Science Fair in Raleigh and having a greater presence in the State Science Olympiad.

Thanks to Ann Scarborough and Peggy Holiday, the conference was a great success. Some of the evaluation comments include: "My first conference experience was great. I learned a lot and it was so nice to spend time with other teachers and discuss 'Quality Education'", "The conference keeps getting better and better. Thanks for the continuous improvements implemented each year." Robert Bakker gave us much more of his time than we figured and the membership seemed to enjoy his talks. Some members wanted more elementary and middle workshops. There was a suggestion on leaving the exhibitors open longer so they could visit and still get 10 hours of credit. Your Board will look at these suggestions. As you think of suggestions for next year please e-mail your association.

Next years conference should be exciting because of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers Flight. NASA will have a big presence in our conference. They will have at least one workshop each session and have several booths in the exhibit hall with lots of free NASA materials. We are planning several NASA speakers and our luncheon speaker might just be an astronaut. We are working to give our membership a greater insight into how to work with the "No Child Left Behind" legislation for help in attending the conference.

We have some challenges ahead. We need a greater participation in the conference as attendees and presentors. Each of you presents to you students daily so planning a presentation for the conference should be easy. Our moneys are running low because of the lower conference attendance but our services to the membership will not lack. As you have ideas of improvements the organization can make please contact us.

We have lost several of our past presidents and other valued members this year. When we, as an organization, reflect on their lives we must continue to strive to reach the goals they have set for us. You must continue to serve and support your science organization.

I need to thank several people as I leave office, you for supporting and encouraging science education in the state of North Carolina. Your Board of Directors has done a great job. Beth Snoke, our web-master has given us a web site to be proud of. Again thanks to Peggy and Ann for their hard work on the conference.
