The mission of the North Carolina Science Teachers Association is to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of science at all levels. Certainly this mission will continue to move forward under of the able leadership of the following newly elected officers.

President Elect - Carolyn Elliott

Position: Physical Science teacher, South Iredell HS; Master Teacher, NCTeach
Education: BS, Longwood College (Farmville, VA); MEd, UNC-C; additional graduate work at U Idaho, UNC-C, U of Delaware, University of VA, Notre Dame, and Bridgewater State College, MA
Experience: 34 years teaching experience at S. Iredell HS, Manchester, NH, Allenstown NH, Granville County NC, and Halifax County, VA. Taught Biology, AP Biology, Physical Science, Earth Science, Science Technology, and math; Title II Math/Science Coordinator for Manchester City (NH) schools.
Professional Organizations: NCSTA, District 7 Director, 2000-2002; NSTA; NEA; NCEA; Kappa Delta Pi; Delta Kappa Gamma; Phi Kappa Phi; ASCD; and NCSLA
Activities/Honors: Awards and recognition: NCCAT, 1994, 2000; S. Iredell's Apple Teacher of the Month, 1992-93; NCSTA District 7 Outstanding Science Teacher Award, 1995; Distinguished Service to Science Education in North Carolina, Senior High, 1998; Radioshack National Teacher Award, 2000; State finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 2000; Teacher of the Year, South Iredell HS, 2000 and Iredell-Statesville School System, 2000-01; First Union Ben Craig Outstanding Educator Award, 2001. Selected to attend Chataugua Leadership Conference 1994 & 1995; Dartmouth College's "Engineering Concepts in Problem Solving for the High School Science Teacher," 1996; UNC-C's "Engineering Outreach," 1998-99; "Operation Pathfinder" at University of Delaware; NSTA-NASA NEW MAST Workshop, 1999; conducted test for NASA Telescience Resource, 1999-2000; NC Teacher of the Year Symposium, 2001; NC Distinguished Teachers Forum II, 2001; Abstract accepted and present at the Geological Society Convention in Salt Lake City, 1997; Master Teacher for SCI-LINK and NCL-NEST. Received these grants: Project Tomorrow, 1999; Bright Ideas, 1999 and 2001; Iredell-Statesville Schools Foundation Mini Grant, 2002. Served on the New Hampshire Science Teachers Board of Directors, 3 years. Served as NCSTA District 7 Director for the past 2 years.

Treasurer - Nancy Bray

Position: Science teacher, Oakwood School, Greenville
Education: AB, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Terre Haute, IN; MEd, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD; Certificate of Advanced Studies, ECU
Experience: 37 years teaching experience in California, Indiana, Maryland, Greenville, Ayden; taught French, English, Physical Science, Environmental Sciences, Earth Science, and Computer Education; science department chairperson
Professional Organizations: NSTA; NCSTA, board member 6 years: District 1 Director, Private School Representative, and Science Fair Co-Chair; Environmental Educators of NC; Professional Women Educators; NCSLA; Delta Kappa Gamma
Activities/Honors: Delta Epsilon Sigma; sponsored attendance (by DuPont) at two NSTA conventions; Outstanding Teacher Award; NC Business Committee for Education Award; Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching Science, NCCAT; twice a NC finalist for Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science; Recipient of ECU Chapter of Sigma Xi Award for Outstanding Dedication to the Teaching of Science; one of 20 finalists for State Farm Innovative Curriculum Award.

District 1 Director - Colleen Karl

Position: Northeast Outreach Coordinator for the Science House, NCSU
Education: BS, Southampton University
Experience: 20 years teaching experience in biology, earth science, oceanography, physical science and mathematics
Professional Organizations: NCSTA, NSTA, MAMEA, and a Key Leader for Building a Presence for Science
Activities/Honors: District 1 Outstanding Science Teacher Award for NCSTA, 1998; National Board Certification in AYA Science in 1998; Chowan County Teacher of the Year, 1999-2000; lead position for many different agencies including the NC Teacher Academy, Eisenhower Grants, NCTEACH, and DPI as a textbook evaluator

District 3 Director - Manley Midgett

Position: Associate Director of the Coastal Rural Systemic Initiative
Education: BS, UNC-CH; MS, NCSU; additional graduate work, NCSU
Experience: Over 25 years experience as a science educator in North Carolina; taught earth and environmental science, marine science in Onslow, Edgecombe, and Wake Counties; was Science Coordinator for Wake County, served as the Science Specialist for DPI in Region 3, and Assistant Director of the Science and Math Alliance.
Professional Organizations: NCSTA, NC State Science Fair Co-Director, 1990-1997; NCSLA; NSTA; NC State Science Olympiad Director
Activities/Honors: National Service Award, National Science Olympiad; Outstanding Service Award, Administrative, NCSTA; service to NCSTA for Science Fair

District 5 Director - Darlene Ryan

Position: Science Resource Teacher, Chatham County Schools
Education: AB, UNC-CH; currently pursuing MEd, UNC-CH
Experience: 20 years teaching experience in Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Chatham County Schools
Professional Organizations: NCSTA and NCSLA
Activities/Honors: Currently a NCSLA Leadership Fellow; NCSTA District 5 Outstanding Science Teacher Award; NBPTS Award for Young Adolescence Science Business Week Award; Technology and Learning Technology and Learning North Carolina Teacher of the Year Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, one of the UNC-CH Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Awards

District 7 Director - R. Scott Childers

Position: Advanced Sciences Instructor, North Iredell HS
Education: BA, UNC-Charlotte
Experience: 10 years experience teaching science, Iredell County
Professional Organizations: NCSTA, NCSLA, NCAE, Iredell/Statesville Science Leadership Consortium
Activities/Honors: 2002-03 NCSLA Fellow; Iredell/Statesville School's Volunteer of the Year (over 600 hours!); selected to be a part of the Iredell/Statesville Science Leadership Consortium
