2004 High School Summer Science Leadership Institute
July 11-14, 2004
Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC

This year the focus will be on the Newly Revised 2004 Standard Course of Study for Science and the new support materials for Biology, Chemistry, Earth/ Environmental Science, Physical Science, and Physics. School Districts are encouraged to send a team of teachers and/or a science supervisor representing the different high school courses with the expectation that these participants will provide updates for all science teachers in their district.

The Science Leadership Institute will be held at the Trinity Center in Salter Path, NC. The setting is rustic. Dress is informal and participants should come prepared to be active participants in science activities including some outdoor field activities. (Bring sunscreen, bug repellant, good walking shoes, etc).

Cost:

Double $375.00
Single $435.00
Late fee $ 50.00 (registration after May 15)
Substitution Fee $ 25.00
Commuters $175.00 (includes lunches and dinners)

This will include conference materials, room and all meals, Sunday dinner through Wednesday breakfast. Dinner Monday night will not be included.

Substitution: Substitutions of one participant for another will be accommodated when possible. If this involves a change in room arrangements the substitution must be checked with us in advance. Please call Susan Hart at 919-807-3846.

2004 Summer Middle School Science Leadership Institute
July 14 - 16, 2004
Trinity Center Salter Path, NC

School systems are encouraged to send a team of teachers and/or a science supervisor representing the middle school grades. The expectation is that this team will provide updates for all middle school science teachers in their school system.

Topics include:

  • teachers as leaders;
  • the newly revised 2004 Standard Course of Study for Middle School Science;
  • instructional strategies and materials;
  • classroom assessment;
  • NCLB requirements for science testing for the 8th grade; and
  • content area reading and scientific literacy.

The Institute will be held at the Trinity Center in Salter Path, NC. Dress is informal and teams should come prepared to be active participants in science activities including some outdoor field activities. (Bring sunscreen, bug repellant, comfortable walking shoes, etc).

Science Laboratory Safety Institute

A professional development institute specifically designed to assist school systems in creating or updating their science laboratory safety plan. Participants will gain in-depth training concerning science laboratory safety.

Date: June 15- 18, 2004
Location: Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC

Are the science laboratories in your school system safe?
Does your Chemical Hygiene Plan specifically address the unique learning environment of the science laboratory?
Are your schools in compliance with OSHA Laboratory Standards and the Hazardous Communication Act?
Do you understand the laws, codes, and professional standards applicable to the science laboratory?
How do you evaluate and manage laboratory safety?

  • Superintendents of Curriculum
  • Chemical Hygiene Officers
  • Safety Compliance Officers
  • Science Curriculum Directors
  • High School Science Teachers
  • Middle School Science Teachers

  • The North Carolina Science Laboratory Safety Situation
  • Compliance with OSHA Standards
  • Specific roles, responsibility, and accountability
  • The Chemical Hygiene Plan and the Science Lab

  • Air Quality/Ventilation Issues
  • Tools for management of Science Safety
  • School/System level planning
  • In depth use of the new science safety CD

Registration form and payment must be received by May 20, 2004. Space is limited to 40 participants. Teams will be given preference.Confirmation and logistical information will be mailed May 24, 2004.
