35th Annual NCSTA Professional Development Institute

November 13-14, 2003

Celebrating Flight: From Kitty Hawk to the Universe will feature a number of presentations from NASA, including our Keynote Speaker, Barbara Morgan, Astronaut Candidate and Teacher and our General Session Speaker Dr. Stanley Jones, Assistant Director of NASA'9s Classroom of the Future.

Concurrent session speakers will be Judy Walker of the North Carolina NASA Educator Resource Center, Jim Bott, a Science Resource Teacher and NASA Explorer Schools Team leader for Winston- Salem Forsyth County Schools, Denise Pacula, a 7th Grade Science Teacher at Philo Middle School, a NASA Explorer School, Storm Robinson, III, an Aerospace Education Specialist from NASA Langley, Dr. Nancy Edwards, and Sylvia Perez-Fasano, also an Aerospace Education Specialist from NASA Langley. Keynote and Featured Speakers

General Session I & Luncheon

Ellen S. Baker, Lead Astronaut for Medical Issues, Johnson Space Center
Thursday, November 13, 12:15 - 2:30 PM

Ellen was born in Fayetteville, NC and holds a doctorate of medicine degree from Cornell University. Selected by NASA in May 1984, Dr. Baker became an astronaut in June 1985. Since then, she has worked a variety of jobs at NASA in support of the Space Shuttle program and Space Station development. A veteran of three space flights, Dr. Baker has logged over 686 hours in space. She was a mission specialist on STS-34 in 1989, STS-50 in 1992, and STS-71 in 1995. Currently, Dr. Baker is the Lead Astronaut for Medical Issues, and the Astronaut representative to the Education Working Group at Johnson Space Center.

Astonishing Science Demos from The Science House

Mike Smith has presented “Physics on the Road” to tens of thousands of students in hundreds of North Carolina schools. His demonstrations at national professional meetings have commanded standing room only crowds. Thursday evening Mike will perform some of his favorite science demonstrations for NCSTA. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity! Mike Smith is Assistant Director of The Science House of NC State University. During his eleven years with The Science House, he has performed “Physics on the Road,” directed summer camps, offered teacher professional development workshops, and more. With a background in mathematics, physics and science education, Mike’s enthusiasm for science is contagious. Best known for his demo shows, he promotes hands-on science activities as a great way to help students learn science.

    Technical Community College (Weather Permitting) Wednesday, November 12 at 8:00 pm.

Calling All NCSTA Members, We Need You!

The NCSTA is constructing a Time Capsule to be loaded with member science teaching memorabilia to be opened at the NCSTA Conference 2013, but first we need you. Please bring with you to this conference any NCSTA member or science related items you would like to be shared with the membership in 2013! Items to be considered would be member pictures, items made from workshops, tribute to honored members past (please identify on the back!) previous conference books, pictures from workshops and from your science teaching.Stop by the NCSTA booth and contribute your items. We will seal the time capsule Friday night after the conference, to be opened in ten years. In order for this to be a success, we need your contributions.
