Nancy Bray currently
teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science
at The Oakwood School, Greenville. Her teaching career covers 30 years in
both public and private school. Nancy challenges and inspires her students
with her enthusiasm and their research which leads to success in the NC
Academy of Science and the Science Fair. Her contributions to science education
in NC include serving as District #1 Director and liaison for Nonpublic
Schools for NCSTA. She is also a trainer for Project Wild, FAST I, II, and
III, a master teacher for SCI-Link/Globe Net, and a Globe teacher. Nancy
has dedicated her life to science teaching and we are very grateful to her.
High
School Category-Fanette Hines-Entzminger
Fanette Entzminger has
dedicated her career to teaching science to her students and to fellow teachers.
Fanette came to Farmville High shortly after Hurricane Floyd. She made major
contributions to their young science dept. and has energized the students
with her enthusiasm and compassion. Her contributions on the state and national
levels include; Atmospheric Ed. Resource Agent / NC which has taken her
all over the country, board member and Pres. of NCSTA, college classes in
meteorology and presentations at NCSTA and regional NSTA meeting. Fanette,
where do you get your energy? Were glad you have it and that it is
dedicated to science.
College/University
Category-Dr. Sharon Nichols
Dr. Sharon "Sherry"
Nichols is an Associate Professor with the Sci. Ed. Dept. ECU. She believes
in inquiry and imparts that belief to her students. She shares her knowledge
with others through her NARST and AETS. Sherry puts this all into practice
through her work with several elem. schools, W.H. Robinson Elem. in particular.
This partnership is a model of professional development and teaching for
prospective teachers. The "science lady from ECU" has helped integrate
science into their L. A. instruction and build gardens to use in hands-on
activities. Sherry is also working with science teachers in the Philippines.
A very busy lady
thank you Sherry for all you do.
Administrator/Supervisor
Category-Brenda Evans
Brenda Evans is the
elem. science consultant with NCDPI but her work extends far beyond this
title. She is very active on the national level with NSTA, CSSS, NSLA
and others. And on the state level with NCSTA and NCSLA. She is in charge
of the NC Presidential Awards Program and has supervised the revision
of the science curriculum twice insuring that the National Standards are
met. Since 1997, Brenda has been working with the NC K-8 Science Infrastructure
Project to promote the teaching of inquiry. This project has led to a
collaboration between the school, DPI, universities, business and industry
in a systemic approach to improve student learning. What a wonderful thing.
And she leaps tall buildings in a single bound.. Congratulations, Brenda!
Non-school
CategoryAnne Palmer
In 1986, the board
of NCSTA realized that we had outgrown our system of volunteers handling
some of the jobs of the organization. The books were handled by one person
all by hand; membership by another; conference registration by another.
We started looking for someone to hire to do these jobs. We found a lady
who was working with the NCCTM in a similar capacity. That lady was Anne
Palmer. In 1987, she transferred our financial and membership record to
computers. She used a program she developed to put our conference registration
on computer. NCSTA had taken a giant step forward thanks to Anne. She
has kept us up to date with new technologies. Many of you have worked
with her at the trouble shooting booth where her patience helps to smooth
the problems that arise. Anne has helped our organization grow over the
years and we thank her for being with us in our success.
Commercial
CategoryBill England
As far back as I can
remember, Bill England has been a fixture at our NCSTA conference. He
worked for Prentice Hall and represented them well. He was their high
salesman for many years. They had a good product but they also had the
best sales rep. in the business. He was always glad to see you and he
always remembered everyones name. Bill never turned down NCSTA when
we needed help. In the 80s we started a Past Presidents and
Founders Breakfast. Bill and Prentice Hall have sponsored this event for
all these years. Of course he was never there because he was up late the
night before in his hospitality room talking science to lots of teachers.
Bill is now retired and we wish him well and thank him for all he has
done for us over the years.
