Outstanding
Student Teacher - Middle School The Carol Hampton Award
Wendy
House , Western Carolina University
Wendy House
did her year long teaching internship at Fairview School in Sylva in
a 6th grade math/science class. Her classes were conducted with student
voice and choice, using inquiry, creativity and hands-on activities
to teach concepts. A prime example would be her focused study on Antarctica.
The students created inquiry projects using CAD software as they designed
a scientific lab station located in Antarctica. They were required to
evaluate the impact building the station would have on the environment,
determine the most energy efficient architectural plan and calculate
the cost of building and heating. Because of her creativity and enthusiasm,
the students responded positively to these lessons. As I'm sure her
students will for the rest of a long rewarding career in teaching.
