The Vi Hunsucker Award The Outstanding Science Educator of North Carolina

Peggy Holliday

Peggy Holliday is the president of Science Safety and Education Consultants, INC. which she founded in 1993 after retiring from the Wake County Schools. She was a chemistry teacher, science supervisor, elementary and a middle school principal. For the last 5 years Peggy has been the Conference Coordinator for NCSTA and the Executive Director for NSELA for 4 years. As a teacher, she was innovative and enthusiastic in the classroom, motivating her students and instilling in them the joy of learning. She served as an excellent role model and had the respect of her students. As Science Specialist for Wake County, she was a true professional, performing her duties with the utmost efficiency. She constantly worked to update the knowledge and skills of teachers and students. She helped plan for several new school with all that entails with materials, equipment and furniture. She served NCSTA as local arrangements coordinator for one state conference in Raleigh and for another one she was in charge of registration in the days before we had a business manager or computers. She has helped numerous teachers attend state and national meeting by finding money to help with expenses, and sometime even letting them share her room. When NCSTA decided we needed to hire someone to do the enormous task of long range planning for our conferences and to handle the program logistics, Peggy so impressed the search committee and the board of directors that she was given the job. Our ideas of what needed to be done were rather limited. Peggy took hold of the job and did whatever was needed. We now have the best state meeting in the country. All of NCSTA should be proud of what we have and thankful to Peggy for the work she does to make it possible. Her career contributions to science education in North Carolina surely makes her deserving of the award of Outstanding Science Educator in North Carolina.
