Distinguished
Service to Science Education Award-College/University
Jose
D'Arruda--UNC-Pembroke
JoseĢ D'Arruda
is the chair of the Dept. of Chemistry and Physics at UNC-Pembroke and
is a theoretical physicist by profession. His many contributions to
science education have had an impact on thousands of students and teachers
in eastern NC. His most significant contribution has been and will continue
to be the NC District IV/UNCP Science Fair which he founded in 1982.
Thousands of students have had the opportunity to participate and to
become "real" scientists for a while. JoseĢ has received 11 major grants
to provide in-service workshop opportunities for teachers. He has been
an active participant in NCSTA and NSTA for over 20 years through session
presentations on the state, regional and national levels. Dr. D'Arruda's
willingness to help students, teachers, and colleagues has helped promote
exemplary science education in North Carolina. And for this we are very
grateful.
